Q&A WITH LYNN BAER, M.A.

"
How can I prevent colds and flu the natural way?"

The Thanksgiving Holiday tends to mark the beginning of the colds and flu season. Why? Because as temperatures fall, more people spend time indoors in unventilated, heated spaces. Heated spaces dry out the air and contain the air making it easier for viruses to establish themselves in our mucus membranes. Another reason viruses spread during the holidays is because we travel more and spend more time in crowds shopping and seeing loved ones. Staying indoors in heated, non-ventilated spaces with large groups of people makes for the perfect environment to spread germs. Despite the odds there are 3 things you can do to protect yourself from these pathogens without taking any pills, supplements, or shots:

  1. Wash your hands. When the H1N1 pandemic was reaching its peak in November of 2009, the number 1 piece of advice from the President of the U. S. to teachers in school was to wash your hands frequently. Why is this advice so often given? Because viruses live on surfaces for up to 2 days - all kinds of surfaces from door knobs to paper money. When you touch those places and then make contact with your mouth, nose , or eyes you are inoculating yourself with whatever germs you touched.

We also know that some bugs are transmitted through coughs and sneezes which is why we have been taught as children to cover coughs and sneezes. The CDC certainly urged all us to do that as well during the 2009 epidemic, but keeping your hands sanitized is really your first defense because viral aerosols from coughing and sneezing have a limited range. A sick person who opened the door to a dept store in the morning can infect you in the afternoon when you open that same door.

  2. Keep your indoor humidity above 30%. If the humidity in your home of work place is below 30% another preventive measure is to run a warm air humidifier in your room. This keeps your mucus membranes moist helping your body to keep viruses from establishing themselves in your nose and throat in the first place. There has been a backlash against humidifiers because cold mist humidifiers have been associated with bacterial blooms. Hot mist humidifiers that boil water into steam do not pose this threat.

  3. Cleanse your mind and body. And finally, reduce the toxins in your body during this time when your immune system is being assaulted by germs. This simple detox has 2 parts - detox of the mind and detox of the body. Detox your mind by managing the stress of the holidays. If you’re tired and exhausted don’t push yourself to do that extra late night holiday shopping. This is an example of mind detox. An example of a simple body detox is to resist the temptation to try every sugary treat and alcoholic beverage offered to you in the spirit of good wishes and holiday cheer. Reducing your sugar load over the holidays is an effective body detox that helps your body fight disease. You’ll feel better and have a happier holiday!

Critical Early Steps
It's important to process toxins out gradually by improving your diet and supplying your body with the nutrients and supplements that your liver needs to change these toxins into new substances that can be excreted via the bowels and kidneys and skin.
