Swine Flu Update

Dr. Joe Bresee Describes Symptoms in Children
In part 2 of our special report from the Center for Disease Control - featured guest Dr. Joe Bresee talks about what symptoms to look for in children.

An Epidemic of Fear or a Real Pandemic?
The World Health Organization's threat levels remind us an awful lot of the terror threat levels after 9/11 in the US. The levels would go up and President Bush would tell us to continue to live our lives normally. Which is true?

Swine Flu Symptoms, Treatment, and General Information

Swine Flu and Pork Products
You cannot catch this flu from eating or preparing pork. Swine Flu is transmitted from live pigs to humans or from human to human contact.

Will My Flu Shot Protect Me from Swine Flu?
No. But there are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza.

If You Think You Have Swine Flu
Don't wait for your symptoms to get worse. Call your doctor or if you donŐt have one, contact your local clinic and report to them your symptoms.

The April 2009 Swine Flu Outbreak

Mexicans are wearing surgical masks and closing schools. What can the rest of the world really do to protect themselves against an influenza strain similar to one that killed 40 million people nearly 100 years ago? Here's what Dr. Joe Bresee, with the CDC Influenza Division, has to say about this new outbreak:

Part 1 of our special report on the Swine Flu: Mexicans are wearing surgical masks and closing schools. What can the rest of the world really do to protect themselves against an influenza strain similar to one that killed 40 million people nearly 100 years ago?

Here's what Dr. Joe Bresee, of the Center for Disease Control's Influenza Division, has to say about this new outbreak:

Swine Flu: An Epidemic of Fear or a Real Pandemic?

The World Health Organization's threat levels remind us an awful lot of the terror threat levels after 9/11 in the US. The levels would go up and President Bush would tell us to continue to live our lives normally. Which is true?

Neither. Raising a threat level does not necessarily mean you will contract this new disease, nor does it mean we should do nothing about it. Threat levels are government advisories which allow countries to cooperate in containing an epidemic.

During the Anthrax scare after the World Trade Center attacks, a lot of folks rushed to purchase expensive anti-biotics to protect themselves. Although having them around may be a good idea, taking antibiotics or any of the anti-virals that doctors believe have been proven effective against the swine flue virus is premature if you don't have symptoms.

Furthermore, if the general population attempts to prophylactically inoculate themselves against this virus, this will actually reduce its effectiveness in the general world population as these diseases do genetically mutate into tolerating the very drugs intended to contain the infection.

In the following days, we will call upon the many experts who contribute to Detox.FM to share with from their holistic, naturopathic, integrative medical approach things, what one can do to build and maintain a healthy immune system that is particularly resistant to influenza without as many of the problems often encountered in western drugs.

Will My Flu Shot Protect Me From Swine Flu?

No. There is no vaccine available right now to protect against swine flu. But there are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza:

Handwashing.

Doctors agree the number one way to prevent the spread of disease is frequent handwashing. Remember if you are out shopping or any other public place, keep your hands away from your face until you have had the opportunity to thoroughly wash your hands. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. This is what doctors and dentists do between patients, reducing the transmission of communicable disease to themselves and those that they treat.

Avoid close contact with sick people.

This means not only in public places but also in households. Influenza is primarily spread from human to human through coughing or sneezing.

Recognize the symptoms.

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea

News reports say to watch out for symptoms which include a fever of more than 100 degrees, body aches, coughing, a sore throat, respiratory congestion and, in some cases, vomiting and diarrhea. Well, those symptoms describe a just about any virus. The big thing to watch out for is fever. If you have a temperature that is above normal and you have any of the other symptoms see a doctor immediately.

If you think you have Swine Flu.

Don't wait for your symptoms to get worse. Call your doctor or if you donŐt have one, contact your local clinic and report to them your symptoms. In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with swine flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions. Your doctor can prescribe effective anti-viral drugs that can lessen the symptoms if you take them at onset of your disease
